Still More Propoganda

[Note: Not sure when this was written, but it was in response to a request for donations (what a surprise!) for a Legal Defense Fund to counter the charges brought by the Democratic National Committee against the Chrisitan Coaltion for publishing the extremely partisan voter guides, which was a violation of FEC rules and threatened the group's tax exempt status.]

Dear Mr. Robertson:

Either there is a serious lack of communication in your office or your true intent is simply the solicitation of funds regardless of the source. I say this because I recently sent you a five page letter in which I stated my belief that your organization is hypocritical and a danger to American society as a whole. Yet I still received what was obviously a form letter informing me I am one of the "most loyal and faithful supporters" of your organization. (I won't use the term "Christian" when referring to you or your organization, because your intolerance is completely against the teachings of Jesus the Christ that I believe in.)

As you may have already noticed, I have not enclosed a donation since I am in complete agreement with the DNC in their efforts to stop your organization from using churches as a satellite office of the PAC of which you are the president. Your statement on the back of the "Legal Defense Reply Memorandum" in which you claim that you do not endorse any candidate is for all intents and purposes an out and out lie. Your 1994 Congressional Scorecard gives a plus to those senators and representatives who voted in accordance with your organization's stand on issues and a minus to those who opposed you. On top of that, give them a percentage rating on how well they fell in line with your policies. The implications are perfectly clear— your members are to vote for those who have the highest percentages for their state and/or district. The symbols used give out the message of who to vote for— a plus sign is a "positive" (read "yes") and a minus sign a "negative" (read "no"). Even your description of the bills voted upon is taken from your point of view. "Criminalizing Pro-Life Free Speech" was not the official title of Roll Call vote 112 on May 12, 1994. I grant you the scorecard never specifies who to vote for, but it doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure out what a loyal member of your organization is supposed to do.

You claim your organization is all for the separation of church and state. SO WHAT ARE YOU DOING INVOLVED IN POLITICS???!!! The act of electing a government official is as close as you can get to matters of state. RELIGION HAS ABSOLUTELY NO PLACE IN POLITICS!!!!!!!! And any religious organization that becomes involved in the distribution of political material, or uses the pulpit to endorse one candidate over the other has absolutely lost the right to their tax-exempt status. No, they have given up their right by violating the first amendment separating church and state.

I thank you for informing me that an organized effort is underway to stop this practice by groups such as yours. As soon as I'm finished with this letter, I'm going to write to the DNC and ask what I can do to help stop organizations such as yours from continuing this type of activity. I am also going to write to the ACLU to see if there's anything they can do. I'm also going to urge everyone I know to get involved as well. Organizations such as yours must be stopped before it's too late.
